Who I am
I’m a writer based in Edinburgh, originally from the north of England. I’ve been travelling around Scandinavia for close to fifteen years — partly for work, partly because the light in autumn there does something to me I can’t explain, and partly because the food has become remarkable in ways that continue to surprise me. I’m not a professional restaurant critic. I don’t receive press invitations or complimentary meals. I pay for my own food, make my own bookings, and write about what I actually experience.
Why Frantzén in particular
In 2024, planning a longer trip to Stockholm than usual, I decided to try to get a reservation at Frantzén. I expected to fail. I got a Tuesday lunch sitting — a cancellation I happened to catch — and took it with more excitement than I’d felt about a meal in years. What I ate that afternoon was, without qualification, the best meal I have had in my life so far. I left the restaurant and wrote twelve pages of notes. This blog is what happened to those notes.
